Sustainability Approach at Latitude 51 Vineyards

At Latitude51 Vineyards, our approach to sustainability is simple: we look after the land, the people and the community that make this place what it is. Good farming and good stewardship go hand in hand, and we want the vineyard to grow in a way that protects the landscape for the long term.

Environmental Stewardship

  • We haven’t used glyphosate on the farm for years and remain committed to keeping our chemical inputs as low as possible.

  • Our spray programme relies mainly on biological materials such as sulphur, copper, phosphates and bicarbonate — long-established, low-impact tools in premium viticulture.

  • We used no insecticides at all this year. If intervention is needed, we favour biological methods such as molasses-based products that immobilise pests rather than poison them.

  • We actively manage soil structure, hedgerows and drainage to protect watercourses and support biodiversity.

  • New wildflower areas and additional hedgerow planting will further strengthen habitats across the site.

  • The solar panels on the barn roof power the farmyard and our guest accommodation with clean, renewable energy.

Social Impact

  • As a small local business, we employ two full-time members of staff, supporting the rural economy.

  • Almost all of our specialist work — land management, hedgecutting, electrical work, plumbing, construction — is carried out by local independent businesses.

  • We host community events such as our Christmas market and scarecrow nativity, raising funds for Doorway and welcoming people of all ages to enjoy the vineyard.

  • Our tours and tastings attract both local residents and visitors from further afield.

  • Our new cellar door will soon be open for people to pop in and buy wine for the weekend or enjoy a glass on site — enhancing local amenities.

Future Sustainability

  • Next spring we will be adding six low-impact glamping tents, offering peaceful countryside stays that support sustainable rural tourism.

  • We are also recording oral history from the previous farmer to preserve the story of the land and maintain the farm’s connection to its heritage.

Our aim is to run the vineyard in a way that enhances the landscape, supports local livelihoods and creates a place the parish can feel proud of.
